I don't often check Google Search Console's link report, but when I checked it recently, I noticed a drastic decline in the number of links. In August 2018, it showed 2.5 million links. This dropped in half by October 2019 and currently sits at 550,000. John Mueller of Google has said they don't put many resources into the link report. Still, this is a huge reduction. Has anyone else noticed a similarly large change over time in the link reports in Google Search Console?

Key Takeaways:

  • The Google Search Console link report showed a 78% reduction since 2018.
  • Google's John Mueller says they don't spend many resources on the links report.
  • New sites can pick up links quickly, but have others noticed such drops over time?

“But something triggered me to check it and I noticed the raw count of links reported in this tool keeps drastically dropping.”
